Nuclear Bunkers and Local AuthoritiesCND and the reports of the Cold War Studies group say Britain no longer has any operational bunkers, as the government sold them after the collapse of the Warsaw Pact in 1992. Both list Bristol City Council has having no emergency preparations and no bunkers. Bristol City Council inherited a nuclear free policy from its unpopular predecessor Avon County Council. The council continued to proclaim their anti-war stance. At least until last week when someone inadvertently sent out a global email to all council staff asking who would like breakfast at the secret bunker after the next secret exercise Blue Crystal. A retraction soon came explaining that only those who were invited to the wargame should reply to the email. Every local authority in Britain has at least one relatively secure emergency HQ and exercises are held almost every week in half-a-dozen of these bunkers. However, please keep this a secret as it would upset members of CND and the Cold War Studies group who have missed the emergency planning build up since 1992.
Completely separate from the above is the fact that Bristol has 3 police firearms per full-time police man. In fact they have enough to arm every part-timer, special constable, police civilian worker and traffic warden if they hypothetically had a requirement to do so one day…
