Polite introductions, followed by handshakes were considered essential amongst social equals.
People would refer to each other by surname e.g. Mr Smith, Miss Bell. Swearing was rare, as were abbreviations such as 'don't'. Speech was usually very polite by today's standards and often somewhat long winded. It was filled with classic phrases such as Top notch, jolly good show, Tally Ho, Spiffing, Cad, Bounder etc.
Understatement was typical e.g. the reaction to a broken arm might be, 'I say, I have a bit of a problem chaps'.
Other period phrases might be 'Tell the cook there is one less for dinner', 'Dashed good show', 'whose is going to be first over the top chaps', 'by gad, Sir', 'play with a straight bat', 'well bowled', 'play the game', etc. Although racism and sexism were prevalent in the culture of the era, modern players can find such sentiments, even role-played, distasteful e.g. period expressions such as 'play the white man' can be misinterpreted in some circumstances.
