Donald Featherstone's War Games (1962) - Revised edition (2008)

Book Review by Bob Cordery, London, UK

I bought my original, hard-back copy of this book in 1968, and it still sits - very dog-eared - on my shelves. It inspired me to take up serious wargaming, using 'proper' rules, and it has been my enduring hobby ever since. Even today, when I am feeling a bit jaded with wargaming, I re-read this book ... and my inspiration returns.

Now a new generation on wargamers can enjoy this book, and hopefully they will get as much out of it as I did when I first read it - and have done so ever since.

This new version contains some intersting notes that were not included in the original edition, including a timeline that shows the development of wargaming. It also makes some interesting observations about Lionel Tarr's World War II rules (which are also included in this book) and these explain some of the more obscure aspects of the rules - including the absence of movement distances for jeeps and lorries!

I thoroughly recommend anyone interested in wargaming to buy this book ... and any others that have or will be appearing in this History of Wargaming series.
